Religare Art brings together upcoming and known contemporary artists from across India and abroad for a closer examination of the myriad implications of skin through an art exhibition titled , 'Skin Deep' at the Religare Art Gallery, D3 P3B District Centre, Ground Floor, Saket, New Delhi, 110017 from August 10th - September 24th, 2012. The term 'Skin Deep' implies a superficial reading of things, a hastily arrived-at conclusion based upon a quick examination of the surface, whereas, in actuality, the human skin is a complex web of interconnected cells that is symbolically as layered as it is compositionally. Working with different media, ranging from installations to sculptures to paintings the participating artists of 'Skin Deep' include Samanta Batra Mehta, Pranati Panda, Parvathi Nayar, Lavanya Mani, Sumakshi Singh, Megha Joshi, Kavita Jaiswal, Priyanka Dasgupta, Vishwa Shroff, Remen Chopra, Koumudi Patil, Yardena
Kurulkar, Neha Lavingia and Riya Chatterjee. 'Skin deep' also marks Religare Art's first internally curated endeavour in its new space in Saket and stands as a precedent for many more to come. The Religare Art Gallery in its new avatar in Saket is spread across 20,000 square feet becoming one of the largest galleries in the country. The space integrates 2 galleries as well as ancillary transitional spaces that double up to accommodate symposia, workshops and other cultural activities. The theme of the exhibition depicts the fragile yet resilient membrane which serves both as a transmitter of external stimuli as well as a medium through which abstract notions of race, identity, beauty, gender, desire and power, to name only a few, are constructed and deconstructed. While the exhibition encourages further dialogue on the subject of skin and its role in shaping socio-cultural thought and practice, it do
